Progressive Field wind turbine removed

(Cleveland) - If you're headed down to Progressive Field this week, there’s one thing you'll notice missing…the massive wind turbine that adorned the roof in deep right field last season.

Cleveland State University has taken down the plastic, corkscrew like structure on the southeast portions of the park a year after it was installed.

University Spokesman Joe Mosbrook says they initially wanted to keep the turbine on top of the park for 2.5 half years, but decided to bring it down after they received data which indicated the turbine generated more than four time the power CSU anticipated.

The turbine also sustained some damage from Superstrorm Sandy in October, so that was another factor in its' dismantling.

The turbine's data has been sent to the U.S. Department of Energy for further study. Mosbrook says they are looking to see if wind turbines can power remote cell phone towers in sparse areas, reducing the need to run power cables out to the towers.
