(Cleveland) - We’ve all heard that being active is good for your health. But did you know that it can also help reduce your risk of cancer?

Dr. Dale Shepard is an oncologist at Cleveland Clinic’s Taussig Cancer Institute, “We have evidence that physical activity itself, being active, having a more active lifestyle may minimize the risk for some cancers. Really just the mere activity itself can lead to better cardiovascular health, better overall health and so may minimize risk for some cancers.“

Studies have shown that increased physical activity is linked to reduced breast, colon, endometrial and prostate cancer risk.

Regular exercise is always best but research suggests that something as simple as getting up every few hours and moving around can help reduce cancer risk as well.

Dr. Shepard says, “Merely sitting the entire day can put you at risk for some cancers according to some research and so just getting up through the course of the day every hour and walking around. Something that simple can minimize the risk for cancer perhaps.“

If you have a desk job, Dr. Shepard says it’s a good idea to build in reasons to get up and move - like using the copy machine farthest away or getting up for a drink of water occasionally.

Whatever you choose - moving matters.

“You may not want to send an email; you may want to walk to talk to them. Walk during lunch, just getting up through the day and making a conscious effort every hour or so to get up and walk for a minute or two is a very simple way to try and maintain a good lifestyle,” says Dr. Shepard.

Dr. Shepard says there are plenty of opportunities throughout the day to be more active - like when watching TV. He says commercials are a great time to get up and move around. He adds, it’s just as important to be mindful of our inactivity, as well as our activity.
