(Elyria) - There were as many as 16 heroin overdoses in Lorain County Saturday and two were fatal, taking the lives of two men, one from Elyria and one from Amherst.

Lorain County coroner Dr. Stephen Evans says the region is still grappling with a heroin epidemic that continues to get worse as time goes on, and it has spread into the suburbs.

He tells Newsradio WTAM 1100 that people addicted to prescription pills have now switched to the more cheaper and easier to get heroin. Evans says they were averaging 1 death a day during the past week, along with countless overdoses.

Detectives believe the overdoses are being caused by pushers selling either pure heroin or bad heroin. They are urging the public to report anyone they know that uses or sells the drug.

The situation is so bad, police officers have been trained to spot overdoses and how to treat them with the antidote drug Narcan.
