(Maple Heights) - A scary start to the day in one Maple Heights neighborhood.  A car slammed into a home about 2:45 Monday morning on Rockside Road.

The car, traveling at a high rate of speed down E. 141, jumped a curb, sheered the side of a utility pole, went airborn and slammed through the front of the home owned by David Theis and his wife.

They were trapped on the second floor since the car took out the stairwell from the first floor.  Maple Heights Fire personnel had to rescue the couple and their dog and cat from a second story window.  The Theis' were not injured.

Mr. Theis says the driver of the vehicle was drunk at the time of the crash.  He and a passenger were taken to the hospital although Theis says the occupants looked as if they wanted to flee the scene but police quickly put a stop to it.

Crews had to shut off gas to the home.  Rockside Road was closed between E. 141 and the Maple Heights and Garfield Heights line for a couple hours until teh scene was secured.
