On Saturday night (May 4), Adam Sandler made his Saturday Night Live hosting debut 24 years after being a show cast member, and Shawn Mendes joined him on the memorable episode as musical guest. The pop star treated Studio 8H to the first ever performance of his new track, "If I Can't Have you," which he dropped earlier this week. The 20-year-old recently divulged that the danceworthy song was inspired by The 1975.
"Truthfully my inspiration behind the song musically was from The 1975," he wrote in a YouTube chat with fans. "Not to say it sounds crazy like them but I was obsessed with their album while making this song!" Elsewhere, he noted that the song is "not a new album but I'm always working on the next album."
For his second performance, the singer switched gears and played "In My Blood." He started out behind the piano before getting up to join the rest of his band while playing guitar.
This was Mendes' second time on SNL. In 2016, he made his debut and played the piano-driven "Mercy" and upbeat "Treat You Better."
