A 41-year-old woman survived for six days after her car crashed into a deep ditch in northwest Indiana, leaving her out of sight from passing traffic. Brieonna Cassell, who’d been missing since last Wednesday, was unable to move her legs due to her injuries and couldn’t get to her phone to call for help. To survive, she used her sweater to collect water from a nearby creek.
She was finally discovered on Tuesday by Johnny Martinez, a worker operating drainage equipment, who quickly alerted fire chief Jeremy Vanderwell. First responders found Cassell confused and speaking to herself inside her car and airlifted her to a Chicago hospital, where she’s still recovering in the ICU. She suffered severe injuries to her legs, ribs, and wrist and is expected to undergo surgery.
Cassell’s family had been searching desperately for days and her mother, Kim Brown, says she sensed something was wrong. Her father, Delmar Caldwell, describes her survival as a testament to her strength, and the family is now focused on her recovery, saying she has a road ahead of her.
